I had the teenage version of Lily write letters to Ellen as an alternate means of a diary entry because Ellen is funny and empowering, and it seemed like something Lily would do. I actually have three people in the world I never want to meet and she's one of them - I'm too scared! ![]() However, upon finishing the book, I did worry that some would think I wrote her in simply as a marketing tool. As I was writing this book, it felt right to include her in the way that I did. I've always been a huge fan of Ellen Degeneres. And I didn't want to hate them, I wanted to love them. And because this book was so personal, I wanted to get the story right, the characters right, the feelings right.īut in doing so, I knew I was going to hate one or more of the characters along the way. Because of this, I knew what my main character, Lily, was going to have to go through. The situations they faced in this book were difficult, and they didn't always make the right decisions. These characters were the hardest for me to write because they're the most real. ![]() How was your relationship with these characters as you developed the story? This is what makes the novel pack such an emotionally powerful punch nothing is black and white. I think one of the most poignant messages in "It Ends With Us" is that the "bad guy" doesn't always look or act like a bad guy - that all humans are complex, multi-dimensional, and flawed. In the beginning of the story, the protagonists discuss whether or not "bad people" exist, or if it is instead a case of regular people behaving badly.
